My first
musical memory and live performance was singing "Jesus loves
me" in front of a small congregation in the church chapel
when I was about 6 years old.
I started to learn to play guitar when I was twelve by listening
to everything, especially the “Ventures”. My first band “The
Crescents” was an instrumental group playing teen clubs in
the area. By the time the Beatles came along I started to sing
and was influenced by any music that featured guitar. I also discovered
along the way that girls liked guitar players!
I formed a new band with Terry Webb, called "Terry Webb and
the Spyders", and continued to work just about every weekend
In 1966 when asked to join the Fifth Dimension, later to be known
as The FIVE D, I made up my mind that music would always be a big
part of my life. I rediscovered harmonica, an instrument my dad played
The years with the FIVE D exposed me to many firsts. First time in
a recording studio. First number one record. First radio, and television
appearances, playing live on Canada day 1967 in front of Queen Elizabeth
and Prince Phillip. Opening for Wilson Picket, The Who, The Troggs,
I am so thankful for those experiences. Colleen Peterson was a regular
guest of the band and John Pozer our manager worked tirelessly to
assure our success. They are both missed
and were important people in my life.
I
joined the “Playdates” in 1970 and spent four
years with them at the Glenlea club playing six nights a week. As
the years rolled on I worked with Dave Poulin on some song writing
projects and we were both signed to Warner Bothers in the 70’s.
We also worked with John Capac doing backup vocals for Carol Pope
and Rough Trade’s first singles.
The main recording studio in Ottawa at that time attracted a few
out of town artists and I got a call to play on Bobby Vee’s
single “Lovin’You” as well as with Frank
Mills, long before “Music Box Dancer” propelled him
to riches and fame.
Dave and Brad and
I worked together later that decade in a couple of cover bands
and then we all went our separate musical ways for
a while. I had a great time with “Shaky Jake” doing country
“Sleeper” an R&B band.
While working for Roland Canada Music as a factory sales rep in
the 80’s, I learned about MIDI (musical instrument digital interface)
and was hooked on the technology that allowed me to be creative in
a whole new way. I’ve since amassed hundreds of MIDI files
and am often called on to make backing music tracks for single performers.
MIDI also plays a part in how we write and present material with
each other.
Dave, Brad, Brian and I have been good friends for the past 40 years
and finally after balancing careers, raising families and arriving
safe and sound in this new millennium we find the time, and opportunity
to get together once a week to drink beer, eat pizza, get silly,
reminisce and oh yeah write songs and record them.
We’re no longer tied to vinyl and record companies and
managers. It's an exciting time. Computers allow us to create,
share and keep everyone connected.
For our many fans from years gone by, I hope you like what you
hear and see on this site. As we are all part of the global
community, please let your friends know about us.
